Manchester City have confirmed that Vincent Kompany will miss the start of the season after being scheduled for a foot operation. Kompany played through the pain with injections and special boots towards the end of last season. However after a period of rest an reassessment the specialists have advised on an operation. Kompany’s presence in the midfield will be sorely missed at the start of the campaign.
However towards the end of last week City were reported to be interested in a move for Alex Song of Arsenal, the powerful player can play in midfield or defence (see earlier post). Whilst Kompany is missing from the team Song would be a good player to have on stand-by in the squad, especially if three time player of the year Richard Dunne leaves the club.

Arsenal's Alex Song linked with City Move
Today in French nationwide daily newspaper L’Equipe (The Team) discussions between Manchester City representatives and Arsenal were reported to start next week regarding the transfer of Alex Song. L’Equipe claims that Arsene Wenger would not be keen on the idea of letting the versatile Cameroon player leave.
The 21 year old player made his debut for Arsenal against Everton in September 2005, he impressed in the African Cup of Nations – despite Cameroon falling short Song was named in the team of the tournament. Some displays at the beginning of last term had some gunners questioning why he was still being picked, but once settled in the holding midfield role towards the end of the season he helped to repay the faith Wenger placed in him.Song’s main asset has to be his versatility; the powerful international can play in defence or midfield. However, the debate surrounding his ability amongst Arsenal fans still rages on. Not many tears would be shed if he did leave the club so long as there was a replacement as he appears to be regarded as a strong squad player rather than a top 4 midfielder.
With City looking to bolster their defence with a partnership of Terry and Lescott, with back up in the form of Kompany, Richards and the impressive Nedum Onhoua; the main reason for the purchase of Song would be as a squad player, possibly “one for the future”. A young replacement for the squad if Dunne leaves the club as anticipated. Without Dunne or signing Terry & Lescott then City would be even more stretched at the back. Short of cash Wenger would be likely to try and use Song as a make weight in a deal for Richards who he has admired for a number of years.
